An online retail success story that keeps on running...

24 October 2016

Having quit his dreams of becoming an astronaut at the age of 19, Myles Shaw, Managing Director of Carpet Runners UK created his online business in his downtime of working for his father's family business.

What began by shifting a surplus carpet roll that had been gathering dust, to earn some extra pocket cash to support his family, Myles started to sell carpets on Amazon, and after a rather profitable few weeks he not only recognised a niche in the e-commerce flooring industry, but his sales accelerated to the point where stock barely had time to settle. Myles then began to search for suppliers and manufactures of different designs and qualities around Europe, and launched his first trading website in 2011. Since then, Carpet Runners UK has become the largest retailer of hall and stair carpet runners in the UK and hit the £1 million turnover mark in just five years.

The Grimsby based business, shortlisted for the ‘Amazon Digital Business of the Year' award, sells customised hallway runners, as well as stair runners, wedding aisle runners, rugs & stair rods. Carpet Runners UK have had impressive clientele's including Hilton Hotels, Pandora, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, Pinewood studios, Trafford center and Gatwick airport.

Myles Shaw, Managing Director of Carpet Runners said “Being shortlisted for the National Business Awards is a real honour. To even be considered as one of the best Digital websites in the UK is a phenomenal achievement. It has been 5/6 years of hard work, but it is great to see that people are also recognising the hard work and determination that has been put into this fantastic niche business. Win or lose, I am proud of what we have been able to achieve at Carpet Runners UK in such a short space of time.”

The business is continuing to grow rapidly, forecasting an increase of turnover by 56.5% for the year 2016/17. Since its launch, the website has undergone three re designs, and the company has become a social media sensation, having received nearly 3.3 million views on their latest Facebook post. Myles and the team are in talks with national media, having recently been approached by Channel 5 about creating a ‘fly on the wall' 6 part documentary.
